To celebrate the Centenary of Bernstein’s birth, several of his works are being performed at the Proms in 2018. On Monday 27th August his Age of Anxiety is Proms 60, and in the interval R3 will broadcast a talk with Glyn Maxwell, Polly Clark and Matthew Sweet about Auden’s impact on other artists and about Auden’s Age of Anxiety which inspired Bernstein’s symphony. Polly Clark’s Larchfield was inspired by the Orators and Glyn Maxwell’s Moon Country by Letter from Iceland. What makes a work by one artist reach out to another so profoundly that another work is created? Age of Anxiety is not an easy poem, and yet spoke deeply to Bernstein who called it ‘fascinating and hair-raising’.
Here is the link to the performance, with the talk beginning at 51.03.
